ABOUT DEBRECEN
As the 2nd largest city in Hungary and the center of Eastern Hungary, Debrecen is deservedly popular among domestic and foreign tourists. His cityscape and identity were largely determined by the spread of the Reformed religion. Reformed Great Church It is the most characteristic building in Debrecen, the largest Reformed church in the country, as well as the largest Protestant church in the country.
UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN
With a student body of about 28,000 the University of Debrecen is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hungary today.
Hungary is a relatively small country of 10 million people, which has seven neighbours and one of the longest histories of European nations with a statehood of over 1100 years. As a member of the European Union and at the crossroads of East and West, it is a very accessible location and an ideal base to explore all of Europe.
ATTRACTIONS IN DEBRECEN
Déri Museum
One of the most important museums in Hungary. In addition to the rich local history material of the institution, it became decisive with the universal cultural history collection of Frigyes Déri. The most popular room is the Munkácsy Hall, where Mihály Munkácsy’s monumental works on the history of Christ’s suffering can be seen. There is also an interactive archeological exhibition.
Reformed Great Church
It is the most characteristic building in Debrecen, the largest Reformed church in the country, as well as the largest Protestant church in the country.
Nagyerdei Water Tower
The 34-meter-high lookout tower of the listed water tower building, built in 1913 and not only today, offers a view not only of the surroundings, but also of the past with the help of a special telescope. It is one of the most popular cafés and the largest outdoor entertainment venue in Debrecen in summer. Except in winter, a colorful play of light from the tower is shown in the evenings.
Debrecen’s Great Forest
The park in the northern part of the city is a real adventure park. It has many sights and specialties, which I will write about in more detail below. The most popular part of the wooded, park-like part is Lake Békás, around which it is also worth taking a cozy walk. Be sure to take a walk on the Medgyessy promenade, on both sides of which you can see the statues of significant personalities from the literary life of Debrecen and the figure of the naming sculptor. The park also houses one of the most beautiful and largest football stadiums in the country, the Nagyerdei Stadium.
Debrecen Zoo and Amusement Park
Here is the country’s first rural zoo and botanical garden, founded in 1958. It covers nearly 1,400 species of 165 species from five continents on 17 acres. In addition to rare, exotic animals – toucans, flamingos, ibis, gibbons, kangaroos, and hippos – you can also see domestic fauna and native pets.
